🍽️ Stainless Steel Cutlery Selection Guide: Why the 200 Series Is Unsuitable for Tableware
2024/07/12
Choosing the Right Material: Ensuring Tableware Safety
Among the many grades of stainless steel, 304 and 316 are the standard choices for food-grade applications. However, you may have also heard of 200 series stainless steel. While this material is less expensive, it is not suitable for manufacturing cutlery or food containers. So, what is the difference between the 200 series and food-grade stainless steel? Why is it unsuitable for direct food contact? Let's find out.
➤ What is 200 Series Stainless Steel?
▪️Main Composition: The 200 series is primarily composed of Chromium (Cr) and Manganese (Mn). Compared to 304 and 316 stainless steel, it has a low Nickel (Ni) content, or sometimes no nickel at all.
▪️Lower Corrosion Resistance: Due to its low nickel and high manganese content, the 200 series has significantly poorer corrosion resistance than 304 and 316, making it unsuitable for prolonged contact with moisture, acidic, or high-salinity environments.
▪️Lower Cost: Because of its low or non-existent nickel content, the 200 series has a lower production cost and is often used for price-driven industrial products.
➤ Why is the 200 Series Unsuitable for Tableware?
▪️ Insufficient Corrosion Resistance: Food utensils are in constant contact with water, soy sauce, vinegar, and salt. 200 series stainless steel is prone to rust and corrosion under these conditions, compromising hygiene and safety.
▪️Heavy Metal Risk: The 200 series contains a high level of manganese (Mn). Under high-temperature or acidic conditions, it may leach manganese ions. Long-term excessive intake of manganese can pose health risks.
▪️Poor Durability: Compared to 304 and 316, 200 series stainless steel is harder but also more brittle. It may be more susceptible to deformation or cracking, reducing its lifespan.
▪️Not a Food-Grade Standard: Global food safety standards, such as those from the U.S. FDA and European Union regulations, do not list the 200 series as an approved food-grade stainless steel.
➤ Which Stainless Steels ARE Suitable for Tableware?
▪️304 Stainless Steel: The most common food-grade stainless steel. It offers excellent corrosion resistance and is suitable for most cutlery, plates, water bottles, knives, and forks.
▪️316 Stainless Steel: Also known as "medical-grade stainless steel," it contains Molybdenum (Mo), which 304 lacks. This allows it to resist stronger acids and alkalis, making it ideal for high-end cutlery, medical instruments, and food processing equipment.
💡 Summary
When selecting tableware, it is recommended to look for 304 or 316 markings and avoid purchasing items made from 200 series stainless steel to ensure hygiene, safety, and durability.
While the 200 series has its applications in certain industrial fields, it is not a safe choice for everyday tableware.
